I can clearly recall the first time I ever volunteered at a senior citizen facility. It was in Baltimore City on Thanksgiving Day and I was 15 years old. I remember waking up so excited that day and couldn’t wait to hold the hands of my new “friends”. Fast forward to 2021 and I’m even more excited to meet and hold hands with new “friends”!
In these unprecedented times of the Covid-19 pandemic, it has become even more important and imperative to take care of our senior community. It breaks my heart and ACTUALLY brings me to tears to think of all the fear, loss and uncertainty that is now prevalent amongst our seniors.
I can’t help but think of elderly parents who were being taken care of by their adult children, only for their children to succumb to this vicious illness. Or their favorite nursing facility caretaker that never returned the next shift because they, too, had passed away. Or, the months and months of no visits from ANY family member for fear of a breakout that could have led to even more deaths.
In light of all the heartbreaking, above-listed scenarios imposed upon many of our senior population, I have so much joy, love, gratitude and appreciation that I PERSONALLY want to bestow upon my respected elders. I can honestly say that I have RECEIVED more from them than I have GIVEN when it comes to the work I ’ve done serving my elders.
Since March 2020, my partner Kim Hixson and I have GRATEFULLY been working in collaboration with our church, Kingdom Celebration Center in Odenton, Maryland, led by the esteemed Bishop Antonio and First Lady Barbara Palmer in serving upwards of 1800 individuals EVERY Monday, fresh fruit, produce, eggs, milk, meat, and pantry goods. We have even been fortunate to receive and distribute prepared foods from local restaurants through Feed Anne Arundel. We’ve had the privilege of serving side-by-side with politicians such as Senator Pam Beidle, Delegate Mike Rogers and Delegate Shaneka Henson, Anne Arundel Community Activist Lisa Shore, and many fine officers of the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
Because of a desire to give back to our “favorite” people, Kim and I created our 501c-3 non-profit, Infinity Home Resources Inc. “Golden Glam ~Lovin’ On Our Seniors!”. We feel this is a PERFECT way to LOVE on them and show them that they are NOT forgotten and still have GREAT worth to contribute to society!
Serving the needs and wants of my beloved seniors has ALWAYS been a passion. It’s been said that it takes a village to raise a child; however, I TRULY believe that it will take a village to graciously love on our elders while they are here to receive their “flowers” from us, so I’m praying that you will join us in “Lovin' On Our Seniors!”
